Good writing and also a really good angle to see the context of Mayweather's comment. Stern is absolutely trying to make the NBA white.

Once I was eating lunch in Chicago, two middle-aged white businessmen were sitting next to me talking about going to a Cubs game. One said to the other "Its nice to go to a sporting event where there aren't a a lot of black people." There was nothing atypical about these guys, they looked like any other mid-level white-collar worker. I always debate in my head whether I should have something about history, race, discrimination, socioeconomics, opportunity, access to transportation, micro-agression towards blacks (like conversing differently when you hear a "black voice" on the phone), etc. but hey, it was my lunch-break! ;)

The best cliche for me is more of the concept of individuals winning football games instead of teams. For example, "Eli Manning won the Super Bowl", not the NY Giants. I heard some chuckle head even say this when comparing WRs??? REALLY! Simply put, no individual football player "wins" a football game - comparing players based upon wins to me, is frankly irrelevant and lazy. If it were true, then John Elway was a crappy QB (3 Super Bowl losses) until his last 2 years in the NFL and Eli Manning (2 Super Bowl wins) is better than Dan Marino (0 Super Bowl wins).

Another great cliche is "intestinal fortitude" - after 15 years, I still dont know what that means!!

I always thought that when Madden or Dierdorf or whoever uses the "that's a real football player/play" one they were referencing the Platonic Theory of Forms... like "That's a real football player, and if you don't agree, you must still be stuck in the existential cave of your soul!" But you're right... Those guys clearly only ascribe to Aristotelian philosophical constructs.

Ha! Good question. They're an outlier. Since they're an actual public trust then the ownership/municipality can dump whatever they want into it. I mean, they're footing all the economic costs anyway. The point there, not to dodge you humorous point, is that they're at least seeing ALL the return. It's not a team that can abandon the stadium and leave them hosed and they're not parasitically raping the revenue stream that's coming in and keeping it for their own wealth. The Packers are more of a socialist endeavor.

Thanks for your thoughtful post. You make a lot of valid points - its like some law student invaded my comments section or something. I think our differences are mainly philosophical. While I agree that the city could be perceived to benefit from the revenue stream generated by the stadium, the other side of the coin is that the stadium and team owners benefit from the infrastructure that's already in place for the stadium provided by the city. Granting funding for the stadium's construction seems, to me, an extraordinary move just to get a possible benefit. It's an effort on the part of the team to spread the risk of the investment, and I'd be behind this if pro sports wasn't deservedly so low on the totem pole as far public needs go. As to the NFL footing some of the bill, I'm 100% on board for any franchisee who can contract facilities provisions from the franchisor. That's just smart business. The thing is here, the NFL is selling printing presses. The market won't bear those agreements because some other investment group will default and they'll let Goodell and Co. off the hook. It's the same thing that drives public financing. People get convinced their favorite teams are going to run off to some other town and they get emotionally invested. Trouble there is that they're emotionally invested in their team and not real important things like breakfast programs at school, suitable park facilities or infrastructure repairs. Maybe some form of reasonable financing can happen in some places. I am and always have been on board for honest and sensible compromises, but they seem far off and unlikely and that's disappointing.

I agree with some of what you say. Not all.

San Diego has been "stadium location shopping" even before I moved to the Finest City in 2007. I believe any new stadium should be funded by three entities: the city, the owner, and the NFL. All three benefit from the stadium and the team so all three should foot the bill. And I mean "foot" the bill. The NFL should not loan the money; it should pay the money.

All three benefit in this way: the owner obviously enjoys revenue from team operations; the NFL enjoys revenue from television ratings; the city enjoys tax revenue from the visiting team and the visiting team fans (for some teams, mainly from the visiting team because what fan of Jax would travel to see that team play anywhere - except for maybe the Finest City!) and enjoys tax revenue from team operations - that's why beer costs so dang much at NFL games.

Should owners foot the bill for stadiums? Yes, but not the entire bill. Everyone who gets "value" from the stadium should invest in the stadium. EVERYONE.
